Short answer: A tiny bite of plain, fully cooked pork sausage is unlikely to poison most cats, but it is still not a good treat. Most sausages are too salty, too fatty, and heavily seasoned for cats.
Can cats eat pork sausage?
Usually, no. Sausage is processed meat, not cat food. Even when the pork itself is cooked, the salt, fat, and additives make sausage a poor choice. If the label includes onion or garlic, do not offer it at all.
Why salt, fat, seasoning, and raw handling matter
Too much salt can cause vomiting, diarrhea, increased thirst, tremors, seizures, and even coma in pets. High-fat foods can also trigger pancreatitis in cats, which often shows up as reduced appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and sometimes abdominal pain. Onion and garlic are a separate concern because cats are highly susceptible to allium toxicosis.
Raw sausage is riskier than cooked sausage. The CDC does not recommend raw pet food for cats because uncooked animal protein can carry germs like Salmonella and Listeria. Ground pork and sausage should be cooked to 160 F (71 C) and kept separate from other food while you prepare it.
When to call the vet
Call your veterinarian right away if your cat ate raw sausage, sausage with onion or garlic, a large amount of sausage, or any sausage and now has vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, marked thirst, weakness, wobbliness, tremors, refusal to eat, belly pain, pale gums, dark urine, or collapse. Onion and garlic signs can be delayed for several days, so do not wait for symptoms if the exposure was significant.
Safer choices
If you want to share meat, plain cooked pork without seasoning is safer than sausage, but it should still be occasional and small.
