Can Cats Eat Oreos?

Oreos are a great tasty treat for humans but are bad for cats. Cocoa and chocolate is one of the major ingredients of classic Oreo cookies. Cocoa is also a major component of chocolate. Chocolate is universally bad for both cats and dogs so Oreos also come under this category. The other ingredients inside Oreo cookies such as sugar, flour, vegetable oil, high fructose corn syrup, wheat, and soy.

Since cats are obligate carnivores or born meat eaters that cannot get proper nutrition without eating meat, it’s safe to say that there isn’t much nutritional value in Oreo cookies for cats. In fact Oreo cookies are considered vegan and cats can suffer serious health issues if fed vegan exclusively.

 

Why Are Oreos Dangerous for Cats?

Chocolate and cocoa contain theobromine and caffeine. These two compounds are know to be toxic to cats and dogs. Cats are a lot smaller than most humans and are also much more sensitive to these toxic compounds.

Although a cat accidentally consuming a small portion of Oreo cookies might not be lethal, it is still not recommended and owners should be watchful of their cat if they eat Oreos.

What Makes Oreos Bad for Your Cats?

While cats do lot have a sweet tooth like humans, high sugar content can cause dental problems and will lead to weight problems if not controlled.

What Should I do if My Cat Eats Oreos?

If your cat ingests Oreos in large quantities you should take them to the veterinarian immediately. You need to monitor the situation closely and ensure that they are not vomiting, have diarrhea, or seem in distress. Other signs would be decreased appetite and increased thirst. What About Golden Oreos?

Golden Oreos look more like traditional cookies and do not contain cocoa or chocolate. Although this eliminates the risk of toxicity from cocoa ingredients, the other ingredients in common with classic Oreo cookies make it a very unhealthy food for cats.
