No. Cat whiskers should not be trimmed or cut. Whiskers are highly sensitive sensory hairs that help cats judge distance, sense movement, and navigate tight spaces. Cutting them does not help grooming and can leave a cat confused or uneasy for a while.
What Whiskers Do
Whiskers grow from deep follicles packed with nerves and blood vessels, so they act like a cat’s built-in touch sensors. Cats use them to detect air currents, measure openings, and keep from bumping into objects. Whiskers also help with body language: forward whiskers can go with curiosity, while flattened whiskers can signal stress.
If Whiskers Are Damaged
One broken whisker usually grows back over time, but repeated trimming or plucking is not okay. If you groom your cat, work around the whiskers instead of cutting them. A wide, shallow food or water bowl can also keep whiskers from rubbing the sides and bothering your cat.
When to Call the Vet
Get veterinary advice if whisker damage comes with facial swelling, pawing at the mouth, drooling, trouble eating, head shaking, eye or nose discharge, or obvious pain when your cat is touched around the face. Those signs suggest facial pain or another problem that needs an exam.
