Cat shows bring together breeders, judges, and enthusiasts to evaluate pedigreed cats against written breed standards. They range from small regional events to massive international competitions drawing entries from dozens of countries. Here’s an overview of the biggest organizations and events in the cat show world.
A Brief History of Cat Shows
The modern cat show traces its origins to the Crystal Palace exhibition in London in 1871, organized by artist and cat fancier Harrison Weir. It was the first organized event where cats were judged against defined breed standards, and it drew significant public interest at a time when cat breeding was just beginning to be taken seriously as a hobby. The concept spread quickly, and by the early 1900s cat registries and show circuits were being established on both sides of the Atlantic.
The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF) was founded in the United Kingdom in 1910 and remains the oldest cat registry in the world. The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) was established in the United States in 1906 and is today the world’s largest cat registry by number of registered cats.
The CFA International Cat Show
The CFA International Cat Show is widely considered the most prestigious cat competition in the United States and one of the most important in the world. Held annually, it serves as the season’s finale for the CFA show year and attracts top-ranked cats and breeders from the US, Europe, and Asia.
Competition is divided into Championship (intact pedigreed cats), Premiership (altered/neutered pedigreed cats), Kitten, and Household Pet classes. Cats are evaluated by multiple judges working independently in separate rings, each awarding their own Best of Show — there’s no single unified judge. The cat that accumulates the most points across the show season earns the title of National Winner.
Over the show’s history, the Persian breed has been the most decorated, having won Best Cat at the International more times than any other breed. The CFA licenses approximately 400 shows worldwide each year through its affiliated clubs.
The Supreme Cat Show (UK)
Organized by the GCCF, the Supreme Cat Show is the most prestigious cat competition in the United Kingdom and the largest single-venue cat show in the world. It has been held annually since 1976, typically in October or November, at large exhibition venues — for many years at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, with the event relocating to the Exhibition Centre Liverpool in 2022.
The Supreme is unusual in that only cats that have already won awards at other GCCF championship shows are eligible to enter. This means every cat in the building has already proven itself at a lower level. The show awards coveted titles including UK Champion, Supreme Champion, and the overall Supreme Exhibit — Best in Show.
Non-pedigree cats (referred to as “moggies” in the UK) and pedigree pet cats can also compete in their own classes, vying for Master Cat and Supreme titles.
TICA Shows
The International Cat Association (TICA), founded in 1979, runs its own worldwide show circuit that is particularly strong in North America, Europe, and Southeast Asia. TICA is notable for accepting a wider range of breeds than some other registries, including newer and experimental breeds. TICA shows follow a similar multi-ring, independent-judge format to CFA shows, and the organization holds its own annual international awards for top-scoring cats.
How Cat Show Judging Works
Each registered breed has a written standard — a detailed description of the ideal specimen for that breed covering structure, coat, color, eye shape, and temperament. Judges evaluate each cat against that standard rather than directly against each other. A cat can win even if it’s the only entry in its breed, provided it meets the standard at a sufficient level.
In CFA shows, cats are brought to a judging ring one by one from their numbered cage. The judge handles each cat, assesses it against the standard, and awards placements. After all breeds have been judged, the judge selects their own Best of Show from the breed winners. Because multiple judges work independently, a cat might win Best in Show in some rings and place lower in others.
Attending a Cat Show
Major cat shows are open to the public and typically free or low-cost to attend. Visitors can walk the show hall, observe judging in real time, meet breeders, and see breeds they may not have encountered before. Many shows also feature educational talks, cat-related merchandise vendors, and rescue organizations looking to place cats into homes.
If you’re interested in finding a show near you, both the CFA (cfa.org) and TICA (tica.org) maintain searchable show calendars on their websites.
