The Wildlife Research Center at Kyoto University sent out a survey.
It was not a small survey. It was not a quiet one. It was a national-scale ask, in Japan, to households with cats, and it had a tight focus: tell us about your cat. Tell us how much your cat purrs. Tell us how much your cat vocalizes at you specifically — the directed meows, the conversational chirps, the actual back-and-forth that happens between a person and a cat that has decided this person is theirs.
They got 265 responses in a single day.
If you have ever run a survey, you know that this is a number with feelings attached to it. People care a lot about their cats. People will fill out a survey about their cat the way they will not fill out a survey about almost any other subject in their life.
So the researchers had data. And they had cat DNA. And they started looking for a connection.
They found one.
The gene they found is the androgen receptor gene. It is not a gene most people have heard of. It is not the gene that controls fur color, or eye color, or any of the visible cat-things. It is a gene that comes in two main flavors: a short version and a long version. The short version, the team discovered, was associated with cats who scored higher on the purring scale and higher on the directed-vocalization scale.
Short gene. More purring. More chatting.
The long version of the gene — the one with 20 to 22 repeats — turned out to be specific to domestic cats. Not wildcats. Not the closely related species. Just our cats, the ones currently on your couch, the ones who have spent the last ten thousand years figuring out how to live with us. The long version is what evolution did to a gene that started out doing one thing and ended up, in domesticated cats, doing something subtly different.
Here is what that means in the kitchen, if you have a cat:
Your cat’s purring is not just a behavior. Your cat’s purring is not just a reflex. Your cat’s purring is, in part, a thing that her DNA is wired to lean toward, or not lean toward, depending on a single gene with a couple of repeats in it. You did not pick the gene. Your cat did not pick the gene. The cat sitting on your chest at this moment is purring because of a recipe that was finalized somewhere between the first granary and last Tuesday.
It also means something else. If your cat does not purr much — if you have one of those cats who is affectionate, who shows up, who sits on you, but who does not actually make the sound — your cat is not broken. Your cat is not less of a cat. Your cat may simply be carrying a different version of a gene that 265 cat owners in Japan helped a research team pin down.
The thing that is moving about this is not the gene.
It is the survey.
Two hundred and sixty-five people sat down and described, in detail, what their cat sounded like and how often it sounded like that. They did it in a single day. They did it for free. They did it because somebody asked them about their cat and that, for cat people, is always going to be enough.
Then a small team in Kyoto took that pile of answers and pulled a gene out of the noise.
Your cat’s purr is partly a gene. The discovery of that gene is partly a love letter from 265 households who agreed to talk about their cats. Both of these things are true. 🐾
