Orange tabby cat tucked inside man's sweatshirt high in snowy pine tree during blizzard

She Spent Three Days In A Pine Tree During The Blizzard

The pine tree was at the back of a yard in northern Rhode Island, the kind of yard that backs up to a strip of woods, the kind of woods that goes deeper than you think when the snow is falling sideways and a cat has decided she would rather be twenty-five feet up than down on the ground.

The blizzard came in fast. Twenty-one inches in some towns. Wind chills well below zero. Power out for sixty thousand homes.

Pixie’s owner had let her into the back yard on Wednesday morning, before the snow had started in earnest. She had not come back.

By Thursday morning, the yard was a different yard. Drifts to the windowsills. Cars buried. The kind of cold that hurts the inside of your nose when you breathe.

Pixie was twenty-five feet up in the pine tree, gripping the trunk, eyes the size of half-dollars, looking down at a yard she did not recognize anymore.

The fire department couldn’t help — ladder trucks don’t operate in blizzard winds. Animal control was overwhelmed with shelter-pet welfare checks in unheated houses. The owner stood at the base of the tree on Thursday evening with a flashlight and a can of tuna and a voice that was already going hoarse, and Pixie did not come down.

Friday morning a tree-service guy named Dave heard about her on a community Facebook group. He drove over with a rope and a saddle and a small carrier that had a microfleece blanket pre-warmed under his truck heater.

He climbed up. He didn’t say anything. He didn’t reach for her — he held still, in the cold, in the wind, three feet below the branch she was on, until she was the one who shifted. She came down to him in increments. He let her decide.

When he got to the bottom of the tree, he tucked her inside his sweatshirt against his chest, the way you’d tuck a baby. She did not fight him. She had not eaten in three days.

He drove her home with the truck heat on full blast and a thermos of warm water on the passenger seat in case her core temperature wasn’t coming back fast enough.

She is on a heated bed in the kitchen now. Her ears are wrapped in gauze for frostbite. She is going to lose the tips of three of them.

But she is on a heated bed.

In the kitchen.
