The HVAC technician at the back of the Sunrise Diner on 50th Street in Lubbock was named Reggie Owusu. He was forty-one. He was there at 6:14 a.m. for a routine seasonal service call on the outdoor condenser unit that, by the manager’s account, had been making “a sound.”
Reggie pulled the side panel.
The sound was not the condenser.
The sound, on closer inspection, was a kitten.
She was wedged behind the compressor, in a space about the size of a coffee mug, on top of a folded blue rag that had been in the unit since the spring tune-up. She was tortoiseshell, with one white whisker on the right side. She was wide-eyed. She was not, in the technician’s professional opinion, in good shape.
Reggie killed the breaker for the unit, which had not been running anyway because the manager had heard the sound and shut it down. He took twenty-eight minutes to free the kitten without sliding the compressor. He used: one screwdriver, one wide flashlight, one wet shop rag, and his own thumb.
The kitten came out at 6:42.
Reggie held her against his chest, in the parking lot, in the morning sun, for a long minute, while the diner manager — a woman in her sixties named Adela Ruiz Carter who had owned the Sunrise for twenty-nine years — came outside in her apron with the diner’s cordless phone in one hand and a foil-wrapped chicken tender from the warming bin in the other.
Adela said, in the way that the women who own diners say things: “Give her to me.”
The kitten ate the chicken tender in two bites.
Adela named her Pippa, after her own mother, on the spot, in the parking lot, before Reggie had even finished reassembling the condenser panel. Pippa now lives at the Sunrise Diner. She sleeps on a folded towel in a box behind the counter. She has, in the eleven days since the rescue, eaten approximately her body weight in scrambled eggs.
Reggie Owusu drops by every Thursday now, on his lunch break, to check the condenser unit, which is, in his professional opinion, running well, and to receive a free coffee and an update on the kitten.
Adela has put a small framed photograph of Pippa beside the register. The caption reads: Manager. Hired May 13.
