This Memorial Day, we are thinking about a kitten named Fent, who followed a US Army Reserve assistant home from Kosovo on a plane funded entirely by donors.
And about all the others — Koshka in Afghanistan, Hammer in Iraq, the trench-cats and ship-cats and Tan Son Nhut cat whose names are gone but whose faces are still in someone’s drawer.
They sat on boots. They slept on chests. They woke their soldiers up from nightmares.
They were the welfare check no one ordered.
