Can Hamsters Eat Nuts? Safe Types and How Much to Give

Nuts make a popular treat for hamsters, offering healthy fats, protein, and variety. But not all nuts are safe, and the ones that are should be given sparingly due to their high fat content. Here’s what you need to know.

Safe Nuts for Hamsters

These nuts can be offered occasionally as treats, always raw, unsalted, and in small pieces:

  • Almonds – Small pieces of plain, sweet almonds are fine. Avoid bitter almonds, which contain cyanide compounds.
  • Peanuts – Technically a legume but safe for hamsters. Offer one or two unsalted, unroasted peanuts at a time.
  • Hazelnuts – A good choice; hamsters often enjoy the size and flavor.
  • Walnuts – Safe in very small amounts due to high fat content.
  • Pecans – Acceptable occasionally, again in small portions.
  • Pistachios – Safe if unsalted and shelled. Salted varieties can cause sodium issues.

Nuts to Avoid

  • Macadamia nuts – Toxic to small animals. Even small amounts can cause neurological symptoms and should never be given to hamsters.
  • Raw cashews – Raw cashews contain urushiol (the same compound in poison ivy) and should be avoided. Roasted, unsalted cashews in small amounts are generally considered safe.
  • Salted or roasted nuts – The added salt and oils from processing can cause digestive issues. Always choose raw, plain nuts.

How to Feed Nuts to Hamsters

Nuts are high in fat, so they should be given no more than once or twice a week and in tiny amounts — one small nut or a few small pieces is enough per serving. Too many nuts regularly can lead to obesity and related health problems. Always remove any uneaten pieces from the cage before they spoil.
