Getting hamster feeding amounts right is straightforward once you understand their needs. Most adult hamsters eat between 1 and 2 tablespoons of food per day — but the composition of that food matters just as much as the quantity.
Daily Food Amount
A healthy adult hamster typically needs 1 to 2 tablespoons (roughly 8–12 grams) of food per day. The actual amount varies by size: a Syrian hamster will eat more than a dwarf or Roborovski. Rather than measuring rigidly, observe your hamster — if they consistently leave a lot behind, you’re giving too much; if the bowl is always empty well before feeding time, slightly increase the amount.
What to Include in the Daily Ration
The base of a hamster’s diet should be a quality commercial hamster mix or lab block, which provides balanced nutrition. Beyond that:
- Fresh vegetables – A small piece (thumbnail-sized) a few times a week. Good options include broccoli, cucumber, bell pepper, and carrot.
- Protein – A small amount of protein once or twice a week supports overall health. Plain boiled egg, a mealworm, or a tiny piece of plain cooked chicken work well.
- Treats – Fruit, seeds, or nuts should be occasional only. They’re high in sugar or fat and don’t belong in the daily ration.
Water
Fresh water should always be available alongside food. Check the water bottle or dish daily. A hamster that’s not eating normally may also be drinking less — reduced appetite and water intake together is a sign to consult a vet.
Monitoring Weight and Condition
Hamsters are prone to both obesity (from too many treats and fatty seeds) and being underweight (often a sign of illness). Gently handle your hamster weekly and get a sense of their body condition — you shouldn’t feel sharp hip bones, but they also shouldn’t feel soft and round with no muscle tone. Adjust food amounts and composition if needed, and consult a vet if weight changes are sudden or significant.
