Can Dogs Wear Necklaces?

In most cases, dogs should not wear necklaces. A necklace is not the same as a properly fitted dog collar, and decorative chains, beads, or loose clasps can snag on furniture, crate bars, branches, or another dog’s mouth. That creates a choking or strangulation risk.

If you want identification, use a well-fitted collar or harness made for dogs, plus ID tags and a microchip. If you want a decorative look for a photo or event, choose a dog-safe accessory with no dangling pieces and remove it when the dog is alone, playing, or sleeping.

What Makes an Accessory Safer

  • Lightweight materials with no sharp edges.
  • A breakaway feature if anything around the neck could catch.
  • A fit that is snug enough not to slip, but loose enough for comfort.
  • Close supervision the whole time it is worn.
