Why Dogs Take Your Spot
When a dog moves into your chair, couch, or bed spot, the most common reasons are warmth, scent, routine, and attention. Your spot smells like you and is often warmer than the surrounding area, so it feels familiar and comfortable.
Some dogs also learn that taking your spot gets a reaction. If the behavior starts suddenly or comes with clinginess, pacing, or whining, it can reflect stress or separation-related anxiety. A new spot-stealing habit can also mean your dog wants a predictable resting place.
It is usually more useful to think about comfort and reinforcement than to assume the dog is trying to be dominant.
What Helps
- Give your dog a clear resting place, such as a bed or mat.
- Reward your dog for settling there before they reach your seat.
- Use the same cue every time you want the dog to move off furniture.
- Increase exercise and enrichment if the dog is restless or bored.
- If the behavior is new, painful-looking, or paired with guarding, ask your vet about discomfort or anxiety.
