Can Rabbits Live With Hamsters? Why Separate Housing Is Safer

Last Updated on April 16, 2026 by admin

Rabbits and hamsters should not live together or share a cage. The size gap alone is enough to make cohabitation risky, and their diets, sleep cycles, and body language are different enough that stress or injury can happen fast.

Why separate housing is safer

  • Rabbits are much larger and stronger than hamsters
  • Hamsters are solitary and easily stressed by constant contact
  • Rabbits and hamsters eat different diets and need different enclosure setups
  • Both species can carry germs or parasites that are not a good match for the other

What each pet needs

Rabbits need room to hop, stretch, and retreat to a quiet space. Hamsters need a secure enclosure with deep bedding, a hide, a wheel, and a calm place to sleep during the day. Keeping them in separate spaces lets each animal get the environment it actually needs.

If they already interacted

Separate the animals calmly, then check both for limping, bleeding, fear, or breathing changes. If either pet was kicked, bitten, or cornered, call a vet right away. Do not try to let them get used to each other by repeated contact.
