Can Dogs Sleep in a Shirt? When It’s Safe and When Not

Last Updated on October 8, 2026 by admin

Yes, a dog can sleep in a shirt if it fits well, is made of soft breathable fabric, has no buttons or loose ties, and your dog stays relaxed and cool in it. Most healthy dogs with a normal coat do not need one. Shirts make the most sense for thin-coated or senior dogs in a cold room, or after surgery when your vet approves a recovery shirt.

When a sleep shirt can help

  • Thin or short coats: Whippets, Greyhounds, Italian Greyhounds, Chihuahuas, Chinese Cresteds and similar dogs lose heat quickly. A light shirt in a cool bedroom can keep them from shivering or curling up tight all night.
  • Senior or underweight dogs: Older dogs and dogs with little body fat often feel the cold more than they used to.
  • After surgery or for a skin problem: A snug recovery shirt can cover an incision or a hot spot so your dog cannot lick it. Use one only if your vet says it is suitable for that wound. See when a recovery shirt can replace a cone.
  • Anxious dogs: Some dogs settle better in a pressure wrap such as a ThunderShirt. Results vary from dog to dog, so treat it as one tool among several. More on that in sleeping in a ThunderShirt.

When to leave the shirt off

  • The room is warm, or your dog has a thick double coat (Huskies, Malamutes, Bernese, Newfoundlands). Overheating is a bigger risk than cold for these breeds.
  • Your dog pants, scratches, chews at the fabric, or keeps trying to wriggle out.
  • The shirt has buttons, zips, snaps, drawstrings or decorations your dog could chew off and swallow.
  • It is too tight (rubbing in the armpits, marks on the skin) or too loose (legs can slip through the neck or armholes).
  • Your dog is a flat-faced breed such as a Pug, French Bulldog or English Bulldog that already struggles to stay cool.

Can my dog sleep in my old shirt?

Putting your dog in one of your T-shirts is a common trick for scent comfort, especially when you are away. It works best as a bed liner rather than something worn. A human shirt is cut for a human body: the neck is wide, the sleeves hang, and a dog can get a leg caught while turning in its sleep. If you want the scent benefit, put the worn shirt in the dog bed or crate instead.

If you do dress your dog in a human shirt for a short, supervised nap, knot or tape the excess fabric at the back so nothing drags, and take it off before you go to sleep yourself.

Can dogs sleep in a ThunderShirt?

A pressure wrap is designed to be worn for longer stretches than a fashion shirt. The maker’s FAQ says it can be left on for extended periods, but recommends taking it off every one to two hours the first few times to check fit and comfort, and removing it at least twice a day during long-term use. For male dogs, the belly strap should not press on the genitals. Try it during the day under supervision before using it overnight.

How to tell if your dog is too hot or too cold at night

Too cold: shivering, curling into a tight ball with the nose tucked, burrowing under blankets, or seeking out your bed. Too hot: panting at rest, stretching out flat on a hard floor, moving away from the bed, or restlessness. If your dog seems uncomfortable in a shirt, a blanket they can move onto and off of is often a better fix. A raised or orthopedic bed also helps older dogs stay off a cold floor; see choosing a dog sleeping surface.

For outdoor cold rather than a chilly bedroom, read does my dog need a winter coat. And if you are trying to work out whether night-time restlessness is normal, dog sleep patterns covers what to expect.

Safety checklist before the first night

  1. Let your dog wear the shirt for an hour or two during the day while you watch.
  2. Check the armpits, neck and belly for rubbing when you take it off.
  3. Make sure your dog can lie down, stand up, turn around and go to the toilet normally.
  4. Remove anything chewable: tags, bows, buttons, loose threads.
  5. Wash it regularly. A damp or dirty shirt against the skin overnight can lead to irritation.

When to call your vet

Call your vet if you see red, broken or moist skin under the shirt, if your dog is licking or chewing at an incision despite the covering, or if your dog seems cold all the time even indoors. Feeling the cold more than usual can be linked to weight loss, low thyroid function or other health changes in older dogs and is worth a check.

FAQ

Can dogs sleep in clothes every night?

Some thin-coated dogs do fine in a light shirt every night in winter, as long as it fits, stays clean and dry, and comes off for a few hours each day so the skin can breathe. Most dogs with a normal coat do not need clothes at all indoors.

Can a puppy sleep in a shirt?

Puppies chew, grow quickly and are hard to fit, so a worn shirt is riskier for them. A warm, draught-free crate with bedding is usually safer. If a vet has recommended a garment for a medical reason, follow their sizing advice and check it often.

Is it OK for my dog to sleep in a sweater?

Only in a genuinely cold room and only for dogs that need the warmth. Sweaters trap more heat than a T-shirt, so watch for panting or restlessness and take it off if your dog seems warm.

Why does my dog sleep on my clothes?

Your clothes smell like you, which many dogs find reassuring, and a pile of soft fabric makes a comfortable nest. It is normal behaviour. Just keep socks and underwear out of reach, as dogs sometimes swallow them.
