Marshmallows are not a useful cat snack. They are mostly sugar and air, so they do not help a cat nutritionally, and the sticky texture can be a choking risk.
Why to skip them
Plain marshmallows can still upset a cat’s stomach if enough is eaten, but the bigger problems are coatings and add-ins. Chocolate-coated marshmallows should be treated as unsafe because chocolate is toxic to pets. Sugar-free marshmallows are also a concern if they contain sweeteners such as xylitol, which can be dangerous in pet products.
If your cat stole a small bite
A single tiny bite of plain marshmallow is usually more of a watch-and-monitor situation than a panic, but call your veterinarian sooner if your cat ate a larger amount, chewed on a wrapper, or got into a chocolate or sugar-free version. Watch for vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, coughing, gagging, or not eating.
What cats should get instead
