Now imagine scrolling past that face on TikTok at two in the morning and genuinely not knowing whether you’re looking at a cat or a dog.
That’s Billy.
His full name is Bilbo Baggins — because of course it is — and he’s a Scottish Fold rescue kitten with a grey coat, white-tipped paws, and a face that has launched approximately three million confused double-takes. His owner, who goes by @billybillbaggins on TikTok, started posting videos of Billy after adopting him. The account blew up overnight.
The first video introducing Billy racked up over 3 million views. Comments poured in from people convinced he couldn’t possibly be a real cat. “That’s a puppy in a cat suit,” read one of the top reactions. Others speculated he might be part Oriental Shorthair, which would explain the slightly elongated facial structure that Parade Pets described as “suspiciously puppy-like.”
Billy is not part puppy. He is, as his owner has confirmed more than once, one hundred percent cat.
What makes him look so canine is the same thing that makes all Scottish Folds distinctive: a natural genetic mutation that affects cartilage development, causing the ears to fold forward and down. Most Scottish Folds have a subtle fold. Billy’s is dramatic — his ears sit flat against his head and droop outward, giving him the silhouette of a Beagle who just heard the word “bath.”
But it’s the combination that breaks people’s brains. The folded ears, plus the wide-set blue eyes, plus the round face, plus the tiny nose — individually, each trait belongs to a cat. Together, they assemble into something that no one’s mental filing system can quite categorise.
His daily life, according to his TikTok, is thoroughly feline. He stalks feather toys with the intensity of a lion tracking a gazelle. He falls asleep mid-play, face-first into the carpet. He sits in the signature Scottish Fold “Buddha position” — legs splayed, belly exposed — looking like a tiny grey frog meditating on the meaning of kibble.
His owner’s reaction to the overnight fame has been equal parts bewildered and delighted. She adopted Billy as a rescue kitten without expecting anything more than a companion. She didn’t plan for millions of strangers to debate his species in her comments section.
The breed debate hasn’t slowed down. Some insist he’s a purebred Scottish Fold. Others are convinced there’s something else mixed in — British Shorthair, maybe, or a dash of Oriental. Billy, for his part, has offered no comment. He was last seen sitting on a windowsill, staring at a pigeon with an expression that can only be described as both predatory and confused.
Scottish Fold owners watching these videos are doing a very specific thing: squinting at their own cat, then back at Billy, then back at their cat. Some are mildly offended that their Fold doesn’t look like a puppy. Others are posting comparison photos with the caption “mine also looks like a dog, just a different dog.”
Whatever Billy is — purebred, mixed, or something the internet invented — he started as a rescue kitten nobody expected anything from. Now he’s the most argued-about face on cat TikTok, and he hasn’t even finished growing into those ears yet.
